Pacem in Terris – Cross Border Peace was re-established to be an independent department under the arm of Caritas of the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar. Being formed only recently, the department is still finding ways on how to further strengthen and setting up structures to ensure a broader outreach and efficient distribution of responsibilities.
The department is directed by the coordinator, with technical support from Civil Peace Worker (Justice and Peace Department in cooperation with the German Association for Development Cooperation AGEH/ZFD). There are plans to implement the position of a project officer as soon as funds allow.
Vision
Pastoralist communities can exercise peaceful coexistence and conflict transformation along the borders of neighbouring countries and counties through sharing of the natural resources like water and pasture.
Mission
In support of this vision the Pacem in Terris – Cross Border Department will strengthen and establish structures and processes like regular peace meetings, exchange visits, connector projects, peace conferences and other peace activities among the bordering pastoralist communities. The department will also coordinate the collaboration with other diocesan actors who are interested in implementing cross border activities.
The Cross-Border Department works closely with the focus groups of kraal leaders, women groups and youth as their direct partners, whereas the entire conflicting communities in the focus area of Oropoi/Kaboong are considered as indirect partners. The department partners strategically with other diocesan departments and actors, respective parishes/CBOs and NGOs in the border areas, as well as the media.
